History

The Japanese Scandinavian Radiological Society (JSRS) was founded in 1985 by Professor Kumazaki from Tokyo and Professor Nordenström from Stockholm during an international radiology congress in Hawaii. Their vision was clear: to strengthen collaboration between Japan and Scandinavia in the field of radiology by facilitating scientific exchange, organizing joint conferences, and supporting young radiologists in their academic and professional development.

Since its establishment, JSRS has fostered a unique bridge between two distinct medical communities, creating opportunities for knowledge sharing and cultural exchange. The society’s primary mission has remained unchanged—to promote scientific progress, international cooperation, and professional development in radiology.

One of JSRS’s key initiatives has been the exchange program for young radiologists, allowing promising professionals to train and conduct research at leading institutions in both Japan and Scandinavia. This initiative has helped build strong professional networks and contributed to the advancement of radiological science on both sides of the world.

In 1993, JSRS strengthened its impact by integrating its biannual meetings with the Nordic Japan PACS Symposium, a forum dedicated to the development and exchange of ideas on Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS). This collaboration has enhanced discussions on cutting-edge radiological technologies, ensuring that JSRS remains at the forefront of medical imaging innovation.

JSRS has hosted 15 successful symposia in cities across Japan and Scandinavia, including Tokyo, Stockholm, Oslo, Bergen, and Turku. Each event has brought together renowned radiologists, researchers, and healthcare professionals to share groundbreaking research, discuss industry challenges, and explore emerging technologies in medical imaging.

The society continues to expand its reach and influence, with the upcoming 16th JSRS Symposium set to take place in Copenhagen in 2026, further strengthening ties between Japan and Scandinavia.

With a legacy spanning nearly four decades, JSRS remains dedicated to its founding principles of collaboration, innovation, and education. As radiology continues to evolve with advancements in AI, interventional imaging, and nuclear medicine, JSRS will play a crucial role in ensuring that radiologists from both Japan and Scandinavia remain at the cutting edge of their field.
